Here’s the truth. I don’t love cardio. I’ll do yoga/barre/strength training all day long. The only reason I run is because it’s a way for my husband and I to spend time together that doesn’t include eating or consuming alcoholic bevs.
So, my favorite form of cardio is a good spin class. But….I think rowing may just be a close second. I’ve heard of indoor rowing classes – they’re on the rise on the east and west coast, but thankfully we have a boutique rowing studio right here in Northeast Minneapolis.
I paid a visit to weRow in Minneapolis and immediately fell in love. Indoor rowing is for everyone; young or old, male or female, big or small, fit or unfit. Rowing like spinning is super low impact and torches the calories. While cycling classes focus mostly on the lower body and a bit of core, rowing works nearly every muscle with every stroke—from the legs working to propel the body backwards, to the arms and back working to pull the handlebar toward the chest, to the core working on stability. It will take me a few times to get in the swing of rowing, because there is a technique to perfecting your form. The better the form, the stronger the workout. My booty was BURNING when I finished class.
Okay, you might be thinking that this type of class seems boring. How much can you do on a rowing machine? Turns out, the class flies by. The weRow instructor brings in bouts of endurance exercises to sprints, to time trials and group races. It was a blast. Everyone in class is super encouraging and helpful (the gal next to me was nice enough to answer my questions during class).
The Signature class is 50 minutes long and can burn up to 1200 calories per class (WOWZA)! At the end of class the instructor encourages you to take a photo of your digital console which gives you the stats of your class and then you can work on crushing those numbers at your next class. weRow also offers a sculpt class which incorporates some off the machine strength training and a zenFlow class that brings in some yoga and stretching elements.
