Truth – I workout a lot. I like to think that I am a fairly fit person. I decided it was time to go through a fitness assessment to see where I’m at. I chose Stacie at Tiger Athletics to put me to the test. Why did I choose Tiger? Well, I have already tested at the big box gyms and Tiger trains elite athletes – need I say more?
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into it. I would rather not know, so I don’t have crazy expectations. I knew what I wanted from it, and that was to know and understand my heart rate zones. I want to make sure I am working out efficiently and not just sweating.
I strapped on my heart rate monitor and handed her the watch. She would be watching my heart rate closely during the assessment. First, we sat for a few minutes so she could record my resting heart rate. Next, it was the cardio portion of the test on the arc trainer. I started with a light warm-up and during the next 30 minutes she took me through 3 intervals of gradual resistance add-ons while I maintained a set “speed”. Stacie watched me closely for visual cues of my exhaust. It was all based on perceived exertion. Was my nose running? Could I hold a conversation? Could I only give one word responses? Can I keep going? Are my legs and lungs completely exhausted?
After the cardio portion I sat quietly while she recorded my heart rate as I recovered. Then, it was a strength test (push ups on toes). After my humiliating strength eval, we did some other physical therapy type exercises so she could get a sense of how my muscles were performing during different movements.
All in all, I am extremely happy that I put myself to the test. Stacie is analyzing my performance and is putting together a training regimen along exercise recommendations, so that I am able to be more efficient with my time. I do know that I need to work on building my cardio base – so, more cardio at lower heart rate zones. I am excited to see how my body responds to my new training protocol. I will keep everyone posted on my progress.
Tiger Athletics offers a variety of classes, personal training, and they just introduced a new program called TigerLean for those looking to achieve weightloss.
